Education loan without collateral, explained.
No property to pledge? You still have real options. Here's who qualifies, which lenders offer it, and what to expect.
An unsecured (or collateral-free) education loan is a loan you get without pledging property, an FD, or other assets. Approval rests mainly on your academic profile, your chosen course and university, and a co-applicant's income — not on security.
Who typically qualifies
Strong academicsRanked universityEmployable courseCo-applicant income
- Students admitted to well-ranked universities, especially for STEM and professional courses.
- Profiles with a co-applicant (parent/sibling/spouse) who has stable, verifiable income.
- Courses with clear job outcomes — lenders weigh your future earning potential.
Which lenders offer it
Collateral-free loans mostly come from NBFCs and international lenders, and — up to a limit — some banks:
- NBFCs (e.g. Avanse, Credila, Auxilo, InCred): built for study-abroad, faster processing, higher rates than secured.
- International lenders (e.g. MPOWER, Prodigy): no Indian co-signer or collateral needed; approval based on your admission and potential.
- Banks: some public banks offer smaller unsecured amounts (often up to ~₹7.5 lakh) under education loan schemes.
Rule of thumb: unsecured loans trade a slightly higher interest rate for speed and the fact that you don't risk an asset. If you can offer collateral, a secured loan is usually cheaper.
What you'll typically need
- Admission/offer letter, academic transcripts, and test scores.
- KYC for student and co-applicant.
- Co-applicant income proof (salary slips / ITR / bank statements).
